چکیده

This study provides a first attempt from a toxicological perspective to put forward, in general terms and explanations, the toxicity series of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) to Thiobacillus thiooxidans BC1. Sulphur oxidation and sulphuric acid production are strongly related to microbial growth at pH less than 4. Dose–response analysis on chronic and acute toxicity (e.g. EC20, median effective dose EC50 and slope factor B) of divalent cadmium, copper and zinc cations suggests a toxicity series of Cu>Cd Zn to T. thiooxidans BC1. Zn(II) is termed non-toxic and the maximum treatment concentrations of Cd(II) and Cu(II) are approximately 300, 400 mg/l, respectively. This assessment clearly indicates viable operation ranges of metal bioleaching for mine wastewater treatment, suggesting a technological feasibility of biotreatment using acidophilic thiobacilli T. thiooxidans BC1. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Biosorption of Zn(II) and Cu(II) by the indigenous Thiobacillus thiooxidans

Biosorption of each of the heavy metals, Zn(II) and Cu(II), and of the binary mixture of these two metal ions by the indigenous Thiobacillus thiooxidans was investigated in this study. Equilibrium concentration (qm) and dissociation constant (Kd) were calculated by fitting the experimental data with the Langmuir isotherms. The effects of pH, pretreatment of biomass, and temperature on the amoun...

Optimal production of sulphuric acid by Thiobacillus thiooxidans using response surface methodology

Response surface methodology was applied to determine the optimal medium composition for sulphuric acid production by an indigenous Thiobacillus thiooxidans. With a view to reducing the number of experiments and obtaining the mutual interactions between the variables, a 24 full-factorial central composite design was employed for experimental design and analysis of the results. Four independent ...

Effect of various ions, pH, and osmotic pressure on oxidation of elemental sulfur by Thiobacillus thiooxidans.

The oxidation of elemental sulfur by Thiobacillus thiooxidans was studied at pH 2.3, 4.5, and 7.0 in the presence of different concentrations of various anions (sulfate, phosphate, chloride, nitrate, and fluoride) and cations (potassium, sodium, lithium, rubidium, and cesium). The results agree with the expected response of this acidophilic bacterium to charge neutralization of colloids by ions...

Keto acids as growth-limiting factors in autotrophic growth of Thiobacillus thiooxidans.

When the strictly autotrophic bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans was grown on sulfur, keto acids accumulated in the medium until they reached an inhibitory level at which growth ceased. Much greater growth was possible if these substances were continually dialyzed out of the medium.
